Most people think of an eye exam as reading letters off a wall. A comprehensive exam covers a lot more than that.

At Lumenis Eye Care & Wellness in Crest Hill, a comprehensive exam covers your vision prescription and the health of the eye itself: the retina and optic nerve, the cornea, the internal pressure, and the condition of the eye surface. The eye is one of the only places in the body where a clinician can view blood vessels and nerve tissue directly, without surgery. What we see during a thorough exam can be relevant well beyond your vision.

What a Comprehensive Eye Exam Actually Covers

A full exam at our Crest Hill office begins with your health history and current medications. Both can affect eye health in ways that matter when we interpret what we find. From there, we evaluate visual acuity at distance and near, how your eyes move and work together, peripheral vision, internal eye pressure, and the health of your retina and optic nerve.

Dr. Sabah Akbar uses a Nighthawk digital slit lamp system with a built-in dry eye diagnostic suite. During a routine annual visit, we can identify early signs of meibomian gland dysfunction, a common cause of dry eye, before symptoms develop. If something warrants a closer look, we have the equipment to investigate here rather than sending you through a separate referral.

Who Should Schedule a Comprehensive Eye Exam and How Often to Schedule

Annual comprehensive exams are the right baseline for most adults. Children benefit from starting earlier than many families expect. We see patients as young as three, because some vision problems are much easier to address when they're caught early.

Patients with diabetes, hypertension, a family history of glaucoma, or an existing eye condition should be seen at least once a year. The exam is the right place to figure out whether more frequent visits make sense for your situation.

What to Expect at Your Eye Exam Appointment

Plan for roughly 45 minutes to an hour. If dilation is part of your visit, bring sunglasses for the drive home. Our team walks you through each step as we go.

We speak English, Spanish, Hindi, and Urdu. Our staff reflects the community we serve, and we want every patient to feel comfortable asking questions and understanding what we find.

What an Independent Eye Care Practice Looks Like

Lumenis is an independent practice. Dr. Akbar built it as a practice that takes its time. Exams aren't rushed, and patients generally feel like the conversation was worth having. We hear consistently that the experience here is different from what patients have had at larger or chain practices.

We see everyone from three-year-olds having their first exam to adults managing ongoing eye conditions. Every visit gets the same attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a comprehensive eye exam take at Lumenis?

Most exams run 45 minutes to an hour. If dilation is included or we're doing additional testing, expect closer to 90 minutes. We'll give you a realistic estimate when you schedule.

A school screening checks whether a child can see a chart at a standard distance. It won't catch farsightedness, eye tracking problems, muscle imbalances, or internal eye health issues. A comprehensive exam covers all of those. Many children who pass screenings still have vision problems.

Many vision plans cover annual comprehensive exams. If you have a condition like diabetes, high eye pressure, or macular changes, your medical insurance, including Medicare Part B, may cover medically necessary eye care separately from routine vision benefits. Our team can help you sort through your coverage before you come in.

No referral is needed. Call, text, or email us directly to schedule.
